ARTIST: AUSTYN WEINER

Poetry & vision.

ARTIST: AUSTYN WEINER

Austyn Weiner, an LA based artist working out of her Chinatown studio, is taking full advantage of the bright and playful West Coast world. Weiner, whose practice has ranged from photography, paint, and the deconstruction and fusion of these mediums finds a certain humor in the work. Exploring her sense of self and femininity, Weiner finds a strong connection to the nature that surrounds her.

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE? BREW METHOD?
I gave up coffee about a year ago, I’m so sensitive to everything and it made me a little nuts— I love tea though. Oolong, Chai, Rooibos – spicy teas.

NAME SOMETHING YOU LOVE.
Being alone. I feel like the more alone time I have, the more I get to know myself. Other people’s energies can suck yours right up sometimes so it’s been amazing for my work and gaining clarity to have this time.

WHAT IS KEY TO YOUR PROCESS?
Words inspire my paintings. Picking up on what people say, books that I read, I have an obsession with words and the way they are placed and how that placement changes the meaning. I write poetry (I keep it to myself) and the writing period is instrumental to my process. Before I knew that I could draw, I was always writing.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT?
I’ll be seriously impressed with myself when I can do massive outdoor sculpture works – when my work can live in conjunction with nature. At first glance you wouldn’t associate my work with nature necessarily but since I’m so connected to nature and that’s such a huge source of inspiration for me, being able to see my work in that space would be a dream.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE?
I get visions, about two years before I make a location decision. Two years before I moved to LA, I got visions of living in LA. I know for a fact that I’ll live in France, I can visualize that. Also, I’m originally from Miami, so it’s really important for me to go back there and make my mark.

ON YOUR DEATHBED, LAST MEAL IN LA?
The Pho Cafe in Silverlake – the one that has no name. I live right by there and go all the time.

Weiner will be having her next solo show in Los Angeles in late January at The Lodge
